I've recently been addicted to this app on my iphone that lets you take pictures as if you took them with a lomography camera, and here are some kitschy Xmas photos I took around the house.

I had to sneak a picture of me in here. Don't I look like the lead singer of some Indie band? Don't you just wanna pop open a tall boy of PBR and Jam out to my muzique? This is a nordic sweater I got for Christmas. It's grey, like everything I own, and I love it! I'm a big fan of the shawl neck, it makes me feel like I'm Don Draper on vacation in Sweden.

This is a box of type my parents got me. I can't wait to experiment with it.

This will be my briefcase when I graduate in spring. I saw it on Etsy and immediately fell in love with it. It's a samsonite briefcase from the 60's that the artist I bought it from spray painted the decal on. I figure it will set me apart from other graphic designers, and will be an interesting houser for my portfolio. I'm also thinking about getting it lined with some cool fabric.

There is an antique shop that I absoloutely love near where my parents live called Curiosities. It's literally bursting at the seems with old junk from the 50's and 60's. Here were some old photographs I decided to make mine. I'm starting a collection of old discarded pictures so I can do something with them one day.

This guy's name can be Leroy. I imagine this is what I would look like if I were born in this time period. You know it's true!

Her name has to be Daisy; she's a rural princess waiting to be saved and brought to the city. She's "Don Draper one night stand" material.

A photography project I did for class. I wanted to play with the idea of a man emerged in a world of femininity or a woman in a world of masculinity etc. I put together these sets for the backgrounds of objects I thought could clearly be represented as male or female (barbies, tools, flowers, etc.).

I was initially inspired by Pierre et Gilles, but within my readings I saw things in Cindy Sherman's self portraiture that I really liked. Some of the sets took forever to put together, but in the end I thought was definitely worth it. I loved the way they turned out.

Aerobicide: Killer Work Out

When I went to see Everything is Terrible: 2 Fast 2 Furious Tokyo Drift in Chicago, I got to see a few awesome clips from this movie, Aerobicide: Killer Workout. It seems in the 80's slasher films evolved into subgenres for everyone, including aerobics. So put on your headbands, leg warmers, and prepare to get murdered!

Even though murders at Rhonda's Gym are at an alltime high, that doesn't stop her customers from wanting to have sexy bods!

I don't know what eighties movies these clips are from, but I want to see them all. 1:51 is my fave part, with the sexy blonde taking pictures of the other sexy blonde on that old poloroid camera.

Washed Out has more of that Chill Wave sound, but they kind of remind me of Thieves Like Us.

They even have similar album covers.

This one is a little bit more fun, but I feel like the dancers don't really go to the music.

I must say it's good to be back in Texas. I had a blast in Chicago, saw/did some amazing things, got to explore a big city on my own for once, but Texas was calling. I miss it when I'm away, and it's funny because I remember from High School-College all I ever wanted to do was "get out of this shit hole!"

I remember hating all the stereotypical things, like cowboy hats, big belt buckles, big fake blonde hair, redneck tans, hot as an oven summer weather, cowboy boots, etc, the list could go on forever.

But Now I actually think that stuff is kind of cool. I wont be sporting a cowboy hat, or boots, but I think of Texas as more of a plastic cliche now. When I think of the state, I think of: Westerns! The lone Ranger! rattlesnakes, cactus gardens, plastic cowboys and indians, Shiner Beer, and putting lonestars on EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!

Texas is a badass state. Between Austin and Dallas there are so many oddities for me to discover.

Just yesterday I went to a pool called "The Fraternity of the Eagle" which was out in the woods by the lake, pretty much secluded from everything else. It had this old country vibe. They call it the "Trailer Park of Country Clubs" There was a stuffed marlin on the wall of the club house, they had rafts of various shapes and sizes for people to float around in. The best part? You could buy beer there! I had a great time! Just lounging in the sun, drinking Lonestar, and meeting new people.

This isn't a post saying I'm never going to leave Texas, that isn't true. But it is a blog post saying that I'm appreciating what it has to offer for the very first time.

So for my birthday I took the day off from work, and decided to go to a thrift shop called Village Discount about a mile from my apartment. I ended up find a lot of really awesome vintage books. I can't wait to display them on my mantle in Savannah!

This book of poems had some great retro illustrations in it.

Title says it all. I loved the era of Saul Bass inspired literature. So graphic, and where is it today?

Oh slab serifs. This book was destined to be noncontemporary. Actually when I picked it up I thought it was a western because of the type face, and the abused condition it was in, but then again it is from the 1940's. Dig Another Grave is about murderrrrrr muhahahhhahhaha, other books this author has written include: Murder's Coming, Grave without Grass, Death At Her Elbow, and And so She Had to Die. I liked the way it was laid out, it's simple, and clean.

Chicago has a plethora of collage material from counter culture rags, to band flyers. Here are a few things that I've made during my free time.

This was a birthday card I made for Rafael. I made the front out of an American Apparel bag, so that it has a pocket to hold multiple cards. The idea was to play with the di-cut of the bag, and have different textures that you could choose to go in it. On the backs of all the textures, are things I wrote him. I had a lot of fun making this, and it kind of just fell together.

This was a CD case I made Rafael out of an old 50s catalogue I got at a garage sale.

I made this postcard for Davey out of that same catalogue, and a pinups calender I've been saving.

This was the front of a postcard I made for Chanel out of a...40's Home and Garden cataogue. The caption was too perfect to pass up.

Some of you might know that I'm spending the summer in the windy city for an internship I'm doing for Hartford design. Did I get this internship through SCAD, hell no! I found it on my own through a book I often refer to called 1000 Type Treatments. I emailed them my portfolio, and the rest is history.

So before I went I made sure I had a place to stay when I go there. I met this guy online named Kyle, who told me I could live in the extra room in his loft for just 400$ per month. Not only that but it came with gym access, pool access, and was only 2 mi from work. He even sent me pictures, gave me the address, the whole shebang. He claimed that he was a graphic designer, so naturally we became friends, he even told me over the phone he'd show me how to do some javascript stuff for web.

When I flew up here with my mom, I tried calling Kyle, no answer. I tried texting Kyle, zilch. I tried emailing Kyle, nada. He evaporated., disappeared off of the face of the planet as far as I could tell. I thought maybe he lost his phone, but then why didnt he answer his emails. Later I saw that he had been getting on Facebook. He was just ignoring me. This evil prick promised me an apartment for the summer, and was now leaving me homeless in a new city. He could have at least contacted me in some way or form informing me what happened, but no he took the passive aggressive douche sandwich approach and just decided to ignore me.

I found a place with two boys living in the Ukranian District. I think it's for the best, since Kyle was obviously a spineless whack job. My apartment is cool, I got a kitchen, my own room, a bed, a desk, a window and even (dare I dream it) a laundry room. Having a place with a laundry room has always been an ultimate goal. Destiny fulfilled.

So while this went on, my mom and I were staying in a really shady motel on the wrong side of town that she found off of Priceline. Usually we have good luck with Priceline, but it appears that it's run dry. We were in the ghetto, there's no nice way to put it. Some guy on the street called my mom "snow white" when we moved our luggage in. It also had this funny red lamp in the bathroom which i later learned was a heating lamp for the cold Chicago winters.

Things were fine the first three nights. Then on the fourth, at 5am someone came by and started kicking out door, trying to break in. My mom and I held the door shut, me only protected by my skivvies. when it finally stopped, we put furniture in front of the door, and I put my jeans on. When daylight hit we fled the motel. It was quite an experience. I keep wondering if whoever was breaking in had a gun or something. Otherwise what would they have done if they got in? They had to have thought about the people inside. It was really scary, like shit your pants scary.

I havent let those two bad experiences throw me, probably because Chicago is so effn cool. I mean look a it! it's in a bubble!

This is the view from the Hancock tower that everyone thought was a view from my "loft" when I posted it to facebook. Yep, I stay in a loft that's taller than every other building in the whole city. It's on a cloud!

This tower had a tour voiced by Ross from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. "dununununu nah nah nah" There was an adult version (which I can only hope involved porn) and a kidz version which I ended up choosing. where the Bean sculpture talked with a 1940's hollywood actress voice, and explained that she (yep it's a girl) preferred summer heat to the winter cold. Interesting.

The best way I can describe Chicago is "it's like New York but clean and with less rude attitudes" So far everyone I've talked to (minus Evil Kyle, and the motel from hell) have been extremely nice and helpful. The Ukranian District is so cool. It reminds me of Austin what with all the unique resturants, bars, thrift shops, and HIPSTERS GALORE. There's even a wig shop called Wigs & Plus ( i think the plus is sexy lingerie) right next to where I get on the bus, feels like home.

Bands of Obsession: Thieves Like Us

I actually did a project based off of them for my first web design class. We had to make a website for a band we liked, and I they were all I listened to at the time.

I sent it to them and they were nice enough to write me back! See some bands still do care about their fans. They added me on facebook and I always get invited to these SICK parties in europe that I'll never be able to go to.

Thieves Like us had a lot to live up to since they're named after one of my favorite new order songs, and I have to be honest, I wasn't willing to give them that chance at first. Despite my reluctance, Thieves had too much of an authentic eighties new wave sound for me to resist. They're not just an eighties revival band, they sound legitimately like they're from 1981. Pros at synth, and dark, new wave vocals.

Below is my favorite song of theirs. It's just so beautiful and perfect sounding The video is spectacular. I feel like if I could sum up the type of music I'm into, with one song, this might be it. Not sure yet.

Their videos are pretty fantastic. The above is the only one that's actually staged, the rest are chopped up eighties films, like this one from Christiane F. This movie is not only really really good on it's own, but it has David Bowie in it and an enticing eighties soundtrack.

The Album covers are usually really great, and I had fun recreating some for my project. It looks like what they do is take a shitty point and shoot camera to wild hipster parties where long haired chicks just get trashed off of pbr and then they take the "after" shots.

Play Music is their superior album. It's dark and disco. Again and Again is less cohesive as an album, but has singles like the above "Never Known Love" that I adore. You can listen to the whole thing here.

I hope to see them in concert one day.

Nina Hagen

I finally found this at the record fair, I've been looking for it for a while.

I have forgotten how much I love her. Before there was Lady Gaga, there were avante garde artists in the eighties that were just wayyyy ahead of their time. Nina Hagen was one of my favorites. She's from Germany, and had a pop/new wave style all of her own. At first I used to make fun of how she looked in this video, but then she grew on me. She sounds like some sort of creature from the Dark Crystal or the Labyrinth or something, and looks like Rainbow Brite.

I think she was never big in the US, although I've found a cassette tape of hers "Fearless" at Half Priced, and I know Laura has found this record on vinyl (I'm so jealous).

In the nineties she went totally GOTH on us all and was the subject of a few Pierre et Gilles pieces, such as the one above.

She also had this Industrial phase in the 90s that I find fascinating. I even like this song, even though it's cheesy and Ramsteinish. She's just a misunderstood pig tailed goth lady, singing about I don't know what. The video is captivating too. Nina with her tig old skull bitties singing a ballad through a mouthful of cigarette butts. The imagery is actually pretty beautiful I think. It's funny how she went from being so colorful, to so dark and achromatic.

The second part of our self portrait assignment was that we had to draw from a hat different "alter egos" that we had to be in our photos. Me being the person who always draws a short straw (see Corndogs entry) got "Hair Dresser." I thought the alter ego blew, until I went the Edward Scissor Hands route. I made cardboard "scissor hands" and painted them black and Chanel was lucky enough to be humiliated once again in one of my photography projects. She is the "trooper" of super models.

Candids always seem to be my favorite.

Chanel gets her revenge for making her do this STUPID PHOTO SHOOT!

Like a baked potato

This is kinda turning into a photo blog, isn't it?

Anyway, I have to do a self portrait for my photo class, and I really wanted to do something with tinfoil, something cheesey and intergalactic JUST LIKE ME, so I set this up in my room and had my room mate take the picture and cover me in a tinfoil suit.

Photo Project 1:

This was just a hodge podge project where you learned how to use your camera.

Eight legged horse. I like it because it makes you take a double take to figure out what's really going on.

Hipsters at the park. I just loved the dog's pose, the look of intrigue. I also loved the color scheme.

Photo Project 2:

This was all about lighting. I went around town shooting things in mid day and dusk. Wasn't energetic enough to do any at dawn. I value my sleep in days too much.

The museum

Okay this guy looks EXACTLY like my friend Sebastian from Denton. Doppleganger alert! I liked the way the light was hitting him.
